Project: ‘Seats at the Table’ / ‘Co-Designing Equity in the Public Realm’
Role: Pavilion Site Researcher; Co-Designer for Rest Space
Work: Pavilion for London Festival of Architecture in collaboration with The DisOrdinary Architecture Project and ReFabricate
Location: London
Date: February - June 2023
The pavilion explores the intersection between equity, accessibility, and sustainable design, with a series of engagement to bring people together before, during and after the LFA. I contributed to initial site survey workshops to analyse, discuss, and identify a suitable site for the pavilion. Key criteria included observing access & layout, signage, site conditions, weather, facilities, etc., as well as practical considerations for the pavilion such as delivery access, space for storage and installation, etc. The main pavilion was designed with primary school children and fabricated by UCL. I supported the co-design of rest spaces as additional elements to the pavilion, namely working with multi-discipline artists, architects, writers, and researchers, actively affected by the lack of rest spaces among the ciy as they navigate temporary or chronic moments of fatigue or pain. As many existing buildings were built 30+ years ago to different criteria, we cannot demolish the city and build anew to meet user requirements. Adaptation is key, and poses a truly innovative moment for design opportunities.
The pavilion was co-funded by the Foundation for Future London and City of London and its Culture Mile, and delivered by London Festival of Architecture.
